Grant indicted for murder

grant-junior.jpgJames Michael Grant Jr., 16, was indicted this week. in connection with the 2007 murder of his father.

Grant is charged with murder in connection with the death of James Michael Grant Sr. on Sept. 15. He was 15 at the time of his father's death.

State District Judge Philip Zeigler on March 18 certified Grant Jr. as an adult, which means that he will be tried as an adult in district court.

After being certified as an adult, Grant was transferred from the juvenile detention center in Bell County to the Coryell County Jail, said Chief Deputy Joe Blakley.

Early voting not as heavy as expected

In the first three days of early city voting, 312 citizens went to the polls.

There were 122 voters Monday; 102 voters Tuesday and 88 voters Wednesday.

In the school board elections, 301 people have voted, a number CCISD's Jim Rudd calls about average. Many people were expecting a higher turnout because of the controversy surrounding the city council in recent months.

Copperas Cove citizens will elect two city council members and vote on 28 city charter amendments. There is also one contested school board trustee race.

History teacher beats cancer

wanda-foster.jpgDenial was her first reaction when the doctor told her she had breast cancer, and the rest of it was basically a blur she said. Wanda Foster, now 59, was diagnosed in July of 2003 after a routine mammogram, and one of the first things to run through her mind were her two daughters, the granddaughter she had on the way and how she would tell them.

"I couldn't even tell them, I didn't know how to," she said, "I was lucky enough to have a nice enough doctor who called and told them for me."

Baseball preps for playoff opener

Call it a double play of sorts: The Cove baseball program qualifying two straight years for the playoffs -- a first in school history.

Cove's Year 2 of the playoffs officially begins tonight at 7:30 when the Dawgs play Midlothian at the Waco ISD Stadium in the opening game of a best-of-three bi-district series.

Game 2 is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the same site, with a third game -- if necessary -- set to begin 30 minutes after the end of the previous game.

Cove (15-12), the No. 3 seed in District 16-4A is looking for its first playoff win in school history.

Meanwhile, the Midlothian Panthers (21-7), the No. 3 seed in District 15-4A, are a perennial visitor to the playoffs.
